Children of Revival: Letting the Little Ones Lead
Published in Paperback by Destiny Image Publishers (September, 1999)
Author: Vann Lane
Average review score:

An inspiration to parents and Children's Ministers
This book clearly tells of the events in the Brownsville Revival. The Holy Spirit can move through the children and Vann Lane tells in a simplistic way how the Spirit moves and how to apply this to your Children's Church. I want all my Sunday School staff to read it and become inspired.

Vann Lane's wonderful book shows God's love for them.
As soon as I read CHILDREN OF REVIVAL, I hurriedly called our Children's Minister and took the book to him--I felt it was too vital to lose a minute. Jesus invited the children to come unto Him; and in the Brownsville Revival, the children have not been forgotten! God hasn't forgotten them; the ministerial staff haven't forgotten them! Vann Lane's book is wonderful! His record of God's visitations to the children was a blessing!

Chinaberry Lane: Concubines of Yazoo
Published in Paperback by Dorrance Publishing Co (June, 1999)
Author: Elizabeth M. Singleton
Average review score:

Not Just a Good Book
I've read this book. Ms Singleton not only wrote a good book, but a damn good book!! And I could tell, she made no apology for the way she wrote it. I am in marketing and came from a family of entrepreneaurs and this book opened up a lot of memories of my own. I am glad she wrote on this subject - Concubines - and as stated above, she makes no apology. I read a lot of books and her characters are well developed and very vivid. If she is not a college professor of Literature, then she should be. I think everyone should read Chinaberry Lane, Concubines of Yazoo, because afterwards, they will be touched and see life and it's situations (as I do since reading Chinaberry Lane) from the inside out, instead of from the outside in.

UNFORGETABLE AND VERY "DIFFERENT"
I JUST READ CHINABERRY LANE, CONCUBINES OF YAZOO AS I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO OBTAIN A COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, HERSELF, AND GOT AN AUTHOGRAPHED COPY OF THE FIRST PRINTING! YIPEE! IT IS TRULY A GOOD BOOK AND VERY FAST AND EASY READING AND THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE TO READ NOVELS - FAST, THEREFORE THE STORY LINE HAS TO BE EASY TO FOLLOW; OTHERWISE I'D PUT IT DOWN. I TRULY ENJOYED READING MS. SINGLETON'S NOVEL AND WILL PROBABLY READ IT AGAIN BEFORE I PASS IT ON TO MY SISTERS. I HAVE A SISTER IN GERMANY AND ONE IN VEGAS AND WE ALWAYS SHARE BOOKS AND PASS THEM AROUND. WE ARE READING ALL THE BOOKS IN OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB AND I HOPE THIS ONE MAKES IT BECAUSE THOSE CHARACTERS, PANDORA, BETSY, EMMA AND EDNA, ALL OF THEM REALLY JUMPS RIGHT OUT THERE AND PUTS YOU IN A TRANQUIL STAGE. I MEAN YOU REALLY GET IN THERE WITH THEM. THE WOMEN CHARACTERS SEEMED LIKE THEY WERE PART OF MY FAMILY AND I WISH I HAD A DOSE OF THEIR CONFIDENCE TO GIVE ME MORE STRENGTH, BECAUSE I'VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT OF THINGS THAT BROKE MY SPIRIT OVER AND OVER LIKE SOME OF HER CHARACTERS. BUT, AFTER READING THIS BOOK, I FEEL DIFFERENT IN TERMS OF LOOKING AT THE WORLD AND THE PEOPLE IN IT. IT IS VERY EDUCATIONATIONAL TOO BECAUSE SHE TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN HISTORY, WHICH I AM VERY FAMILAR WITH. HOW COULD SOMEONE TELL IT SO LIKE IT IS WITHOUT GETTING DIRTY WITH IT! I FELT THE PASSION, THE PAIN, THE SUNSHINE ... AND MUCH, MUCH MORE IN SOME OF HER CHARACTERS...LIKE SIMON JEFFERSON AND ORVILLE DERRICK, A COMPLETE REVERSAL OF SIMON. I WISH I HAD A MAN LIKE THAT! I CRIED SEVERAL TIMES, ESPECIALLY WHEN POOR ANNIE, WHO WAS SO FRAGILE, AND GENTLE, WENT CRAZY. THE EVENTS ARE VERY TRUE TO LIFE AND A CHANGE FROM ALL THAT VOILENCE GOING ON T.V. EVERYONE NEEDS TO TAKE TIME OUT AND READ. I GOT A LOT OUT OF CHINABERRY LANE AND IT'S WORTH A LOT IN SO MANY WAYS AND I HOPE OTHERS WILL FEEL AS GOOD AS I DO AFTER THEY READ IT AND I WILL READ IT AGAIN. IT'S VERY DIFFERENT THAN ANY NOVEL I'VE READ BEFORE AND SHE SEEMS TO HAVE PUT A LOT OF EFFORT IN IT WITH LOTS OF CREATIVITY.

Christ in the Carols: Meditations on the Incarnation
Published in Hardcover by Tyndale House Publishers (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Christopher Lane and Melodie Lane
Average review score:

A Before-Christmas Gift
I bought this book to give as a gift last Christmas and could scarcely bear to part with it. The authors plumb the depths of 31 different Christmas carols--some familiar, some not. In each, they extract the essence of "Christ in the Carol," transforming the words into a devotional that deepens our sense of wonder in God's greatest gift--Jesus. I bought five copies to give before Christmas, during advent this year. And I'll re-read my own as a part of my morning quiet time. Buy it for yourself and those you love.

What a great devotional for the Christmas season!
I just finished reading this little gem of a book. No, I didn't read the devotionals one per day, but I think that would be the BEST way to read this book.

This book is very attractive and would make a wonderful gift! The words and subtle but lovely drawings are in a burgandy color.

31 Christmas carols each have their own chapter. Teach chapter contains the author and date for the carol, then the words to the carol (including all those wonderful extra verses that many people don't know!). Next comes a bit of background on the writing of the carol and/or the theological points that are covered in the lyrics. Then there is a "Reflection" and some Bible passages that fit with the carol, and then a prayer. Most of the chapters are 5 pages long.

The emphasis is NOT on how the author got the idea the carol, or the circumstances surrounding the writing of it (though that is included in several of the chapters). The emphasis is on finding Christ in the carols and how these carols express so beautifully the glorious and mysterious incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Please check out my other reviews of Christian books!

Description of Egypt: Notes and Views on Egypt and Nubia Made During the Years 1825-1828
Published in Hardcover by Amer Univ in Cairo Pr (September, 2000)
Authors: Edward William Lane and Jason Thompson
Average review score:

Detailed descriptions of all the ancient monuments
Edited and with an informative introduction by Jason Thompson, Description Of Egypt: Notes And Views In Egypt And Nubia Made During The Years 1825-28 is the absorbing nineteenth century account by Edward William Lane (1801-1876) of his travels along the length and breadth of Egypt. It was offered for publication in 1831 but never saw print. The manuscript was sold to the British Library by Lane's widow in 1891 and only now has been published, some 170 years after its completion. With Lane's detailed descriptions of all the ancient monuments and contemporary life that he saw during his journey, Description Of Egypt will proof an invaluable reference for students of Egyptology, Egyptian history, and nineteenth century Egyptian culture.

EVERY EGYPT-INTERESTED ONE SHOULD OWN IT!
The re-edition of E.W. Lane's book is one of the most welcomed additions for the bookshelves of anyone interested in ancient and late last-century Egypt. This book, in reality, was originally published after the notes, drawings and photographs made by Lane during his journey to the Nile country between 1825-27, so that it is a mine of information about the pharaonic monuments in general and about Egypt during those years. A clear and finely written preface by the Editor, Dr. J. Thompson introduces the reader to the beautifully printed text and images; it should be noted that many of the latter were made with a camera lucida and count among the first taken with such a system. One should not be afraid by its bulky aspect: you will read from start to end without boring. The shcolarly-minded ones will regret the lack of indexes to such a huge volume: it implies that you must do the work by yourself... Simply fabulous both for the Egyptologists and the Egyptomaniacs.

Developing Your Child for Success
Published in Paperback by Learning Potentials Publishers, Incorporated (January, 1991)
Authors: Leslie Young and Kenneth A. Lane
Average review score:

Easy Activities
This book has simple activities that are designed to help give a child the necessary perceptual motor-skills needed to succeed in school. The activities are in 8 categories: motor, visual motor, ocular motor, vision, laterality, directionality, sequential processing, & simultaneous processing. The things I had to purchase were a chalkboard & metronome. The other materials needed I had on hand; examples are index cards, dictionary, rulers, paper, pencil, colored chalk, etc. These are actual activities you can do and not just theoretical. They are simple and easy-to-follow. I am doing these with my dyslexic son & plan to use with my not dyslexic younger daughter.

Excellent Resource
I purchased this book to help with my 3 year old son who just didn't seem to be learning things very well. The book has helped tremendously! I would recommend it to all parents of young children. It is easy to read and the exercises are easy to follow and do with young children. Dr. Lane explains well the reasons for different activities, which has enabled me to incorporate more learning activities into our "normal" routine.

Discovering the Writer Within: 40 Days to More Imaginative Writing
Published in Hardcover by Writers Digest Books (August, 1989)
Authors: Bruce P. Ballenger and Barry Lane
Average review score:

Great Starting Point For Ending Writer's Block
This book allowed me to silence the internal critic in me that kept telling me that my feelings don't matter, aren't interesting, and probably aren't spelled right. :)

Overall, this book allows one to be freed from tyrannous writing rules. There are forty exercises in the book that guide you in essential techniques such as brainstorming, clustering, freewriting, and revision. This book allows one to open up their creative wellspring to pour forth a gusher of new ideas and possibilities.

Perfect starting point for beginner writers.
Fantastic book for the person who can hear the writer inside them saying, "write something, write something..." but need a place to begin. I was in a writer's block when I picked up the book, lost from not having something assigned to me from a teacher or writing class. Once I started, I couldn't stop coming up with ideas. I have shared the book with friends who have always wanted to write and weren't sure they could, and now we discuss results over the phone. A really enjoyable book!

Duty
Published in Paperback by Bridge Works Pub Co (September, 2002)
Author: Jim R. Lane
Average review score:

Hard duty...
Lane writes about the really tough choices a JAG Navy officer is forced to make, and does it straight. DUTY is a serious novel, superbly written.

Well-written and engaging.
Jim Lane has done an excellent job of capturing the daily struggles and nuances of shipboard life, and the pressures on junior officers, and portraying them in a way that will capture the attention of an audience that knows nothing of the Navy. A very worthwhile read.

Erick's Hungry Winter

Average review score:

"This is a very educational as well as interesting book!"
"Erick's Hungry Winter is a wonderful book for children (and even adults)! It is very educational as well as interesting. The illustrations are the best! Every child needs one!"

As a parent and a teacher, I highly recommend this book.
Congratulations to Lois Sando and Tammie Lane! I have had so much fun with Erick's Hungry Winter - this sweet story is simple enough for my two year old to follow, yet descriptive enough to keep my six year old enthralled. The illustrations are sensational - intricate, and realistic. Each time we read Erick's Hungry Winter we look forward to searching for new details in the illustrations. It's one of our favorite bedtime stories to read, as it leaves us with a feeling of contentment. I would highly recommend this book for any children who love nature, animals or adventure

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT
As an avid traveller, this book sourced out the best kept secrets all over Europe. I was amazed at the services contained in the book - even down to a chandelier repairer! The restaurants are the most ecletic mix and I can't wait to visit and sample for myself. Visually very beautiful and what a wonderful spread on the people section. Well done!

Stunning guide
I could not put it down, the most beautiful book I have every bought

Express Lane Cookbook : Fast, Healthful Meals with Mimimal Cleanup
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (April, 1999)
Author: Sarah Fritschner
Average review score:

A Cookbook you can count on...
Sarah Fritschner writes a regular food column in the Louisville paper and it was one of my favorite items to read when I lived there.

This book is ideal for anyone who wants to prepare great tasting food in a minimum amount of time with ingredients that one would usually have on hand. It is an ideal gift for a working person who loves to eat good, nutritious food without a lot of complications.

The book is divided into various sections: soups, vegetables, poultry, meat, fish and seafood, etc.. The recipes are written so it is easy to read the amount of ingredients and to follow the directions. At the end of a recipe, Fritschner usually suggests other foods that will complement the particular recipe one is working on.

I LOVE this book and I give it as a gift often. My copy is thoroughly stained and warped from countless uses.

My new cooking Bible
This book is wonderful. I enjoy cooking, but most of the better recipes require a lot of time. Unfortunately, school and other commitments don't leave me much time to indulge in the kitchen. The Express Lane Cookbook, however, has brought pleasure into quick, hassle-free cooking. I always have the few required ingredients on hand, clean up is FAST and best of all, the food is delicious. Now I don't need to resort to tasteless, unhealthy meals when I only have 15 minutes to make dinner. Other cookbooks I own sit on a shelf gathering dust - this one I use at least once a week. I can't recommend this book strongly enough for cooks living in the fast lane.
